Korean Hand Therapy

Korean Hand Therapy (KHT or Koryo Hand Therapy) is a form of acupressure/acupuncture.  While applying many of the fundamentals as Traditional Chinese Medicine, the concept is that the hands are a microcosm of the entire body, and by stimulating corresponding points on your hands, your body can be affected.  Disease, pain and tension are reflected in the hands as “tender points.”  There are 14 micro-meridians and 345 acupuncture points on our hands which regulate the internal organs of the human body.

The picture to the right shows some of the meridians.  The hand picture on the left shows how your whole body is represented.  The middle finger is your spine, your little fingers are your legs and your ring fingers are your arms.  If you have pain in your right knee, your corresponding point would be the middle joint of your right little finger.  Remarkably simple.

Advantages of using KHT include the fact that you don't need to take off your clothes, you can treat yourself, and pellets are used instead of needles.  It can treat skeletal as well as organ issues.  It is also a great technique to use with children.

There are several levels that you can learn in regards to using Korean Hand Therapy.  Marcia uses Correspondence Therapy.  To do this, she uses the point locator, finger pressure, press pellets, hand massagers and moxabustion.  In addition, she uses meridians and prescriptions for specific conditions.

Common conditions treated include nausea, gas, constipation and diarrhea, menstrual disorders, dermatitis, eczema, rash, anemia, obesity, edema, diabetes, back and neck pain, strains and sprains, arthritis, Bell's palsy, headaches and migraines, dental disorders, disc herniation, knee pain, shoulder pain, children's disorders, children's bed wetting, vomiting, asthma, styes, colds, coughs and fevers.

Below: Using a point locator to find and massage a corresponding point, press pellets, hand massager, and Moxabustion, often shortened to just "Moxa," (This is a therapy utilizing mugwort. It can help stimulate circulation and is very effective in treating chronic problems.  Traditionally, it is burned like a cigar or in cones.  I use the electric device pictured along with moxa salve; a safer alternative.)

The K-K9 point helps with nausea after anesthesia.  This is an example of using a prescription.  An article discussing this point is included on the Links page.

Thanks to Dr. Tae Woo Yoo, O.M.D., Ph.D,. who discovered and developed Korean Hand Therapy (or Koryo Sooji Chim), in 1971. In 1975, he discovered the 14 micro-meridian system on the hands (345 points in all).

Thanks to my KHT trainer, Dan Lobash, Ph.D., L.Ac, founder of KHT Systems and Chinese Health Institute.  I am impressed with his generosity in freely sharing his resources.  Because of this, he has made Korean Hand Therapy available to many people that could not have afforded on-going alternative treatments.
