Infant Massage in the NICU

CopyofRussellMisty.jpg
Families in the NICU sometimes feel helpless as they watch other people take care of their babies.  Learning a few concrete ways to interact with their baby can go a long way in helping parents feel like part of the "team".  Marcia teaches a weekly class, How to Help Your NICU Baby, for parents that addresses this issue.

The majority of parents in the NICU were unable to attend their birthing classes so Marcia discusses child development and infant cues and how it applies to their baby. Together with the parents, Marcia develops a plan using containment holds, touch holds, strokes or other alternatives that are appropriate for their baby.  One last consultation with the baby's nurse regarding precautions and parents are able to interact with their babies in a loving and safe way.

Because of the stress that comes with parenting, especially in the NICU, Marcia also discusses self-care for parents and shows them a little hand massage they can do for themselves.
