Infant Massage-Infant Cues

This was my granddaughter's first experience with massage.  We were all together and it was very casual.  I see her quite often so I have a close relationship with her.  You can see that I just used holds and I think at that time it was all she could handle.

She focused fairly fast.

She got distracted-she probably heard her parents or sibs.

Her arms are more relaxed and she starts to smile and verbalize.  I think that this is the point that she could go either way.

I thought I would end by bringing my hands slowly down her body but you can tell that she is done.  I stopped right there, picked her up and gave her to my daughter (her mom).

She gave me a big smile.

She is showing discomfort with my hands on her head.

She becomes a little more serious and I am aware that she is just about done.

One of her big sisters gave a little touch and her attention was broken.

I move my hands to her chest, giving her a nice solid hold.  She is not quite sure what she thinks.

Shutting her eyes like she is doing now is not a signal that she is relaxing.  It is her way of shutting herself off from me.  It is a protective thing for her and I need to listen to her.
